Remembering Roger L. Emerson (1934-2025)

News - Intro image

It is with profound sadness that we learned of the passing of Roger Lee Emerson, esteemed member of the Canadian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.

He has been a long-standing and active member of CSECS and he made important contributions to our society.

Affiliated with the University of Western Ontario for over 30 years, he was the author of more than 60 articles, on many aspects of the European and Scottish Enlightenments, and of seven books. Notably, his biography of the 3rd Duke of Argyll, one of the great politicians of eighteenth-century Britain, received the Saltire Society’s award for the “Best Book of the Year in Scottish History” for 2013. He was also an Associate Editor of the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment and of the first two volumes (1980-81) of the annual published by CSECS, a publication he initiated.

We express our most sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.
