The Canadian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, in partnership with the Burney Society of North America, is delighted to announce the creation of the Peter Sabor Fellowship, a new biennial research fellowship honoring the distinguished scholar, editor, and past President of CSECS, Peter Sabor. This fellowship will support researchers undertaking editing projects focused on the eighteenth century.
The fellowship was made possible thanks to the dedicated efforts of Lorna Clark, Elaine Bander, Hilary Havens, Paula Stepankowsky, and Trudie Messent, who developed the proposal with great care and commitment.
Well known to CSECS members, Peter Sabor is celebrated for his stellar career spanning two continents and his transformative impact on eighteenth-century studies. From earning degrees at Cambridge, Queen’s University (Kingston), and the University of London to his appointments at various institutions across Canada—University of Calgary, Queen’s University, Université Laval, and McGill University—Peter has inspired countless students and scholars. As Canada Research Chair and Director of the Burney Centre at McGill University (2003–24), he has spearheaded groundbreaking editorial projects, including critical editions of works by Horace Walpole, Samuel Richardson, Jane Austen, and Frances Burney. His scholarship has revolutionized Burney studies and enriched our understanding of eighteenth-century literature and culture.
A long-time member of CSECS, Peter has actively supported the society by recruiting members, hosting conferences, and serving as President (1994–97). His leadership has elevated the profile of eighteenth-century studies in Canada, creating vibrant research communities and mentoring a new generation of scholars.
